Palmetto School Staff
I am a Rock Hill native and went to public schools here: Richmond Drive, Ebenezer Ave., Sullivan, and Northwestern. After high school, I attended the College of Charleston where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and then my Masters of Education in Early Childhood. We returned to Rock Hill to raise our 3 children who are amazing adults now. I have taught in Charleston and Rock Hill Schools for 13 years, most recently kindergarten at Ebenezer for 9 years. I am happily married and have a blended family with 7 grown children, 4 grandchildren, and 1 very spoiled chocolate lab named Bella. I love gardening, cooking, traveling, learning new things, bird watching in my backyard, and Folly Beach is my favorite place. I am happiest wherever I am with my husband and family! I am so excited to begin the 4K program at The Palmetto School
Hi my name is Susan Downs and I am the 3rd to 5th grade teacher. I recently moved to Fort Mill South Carolina from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and I absolutely love it here. I hold a Masters Degree in Elementary Education and a certification to teach English as a Second Language. Teaching has always been my passion and I look forward to this next chapter at the Palmetto School. Outside of the classroom I love spending time with my family, going to the beach, and riding our horse Tucker.
My name is Mr. Carraway, and I am the 6-8 grade Social Studies and ELA teacher. I was born in Darlington SC and attended Winthrop University in from 2002 – 2006 where I received my Bachelors of Science in Communication. After attending college and leading a very creative career, I entered the classroom as a substitute teacher. After a number of years as a substitute teacher, I decided to pursue another career as a certified teacher. I am an avid lover of the arts as well as design. In my limited spare time you can find me relaxing with my dog, Mr. Benjamin, watching countless shows from the National Geographic channel.
My name is Karen George. I graduated from The University of Central Florida in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in exceptional child education. Then, in 2000, I earned my master’s degree in educational leadership from Winthrop University. I taught in Florida for 7 years before moving to Rock Hill. I taught in Rock Hill for 3 years before having my children. I gave up teaching for 11 years to stay home with my children.
Hello, my name is Angela Grier and I am the teaching assistant at The Palmetto School. I was born, raised, and still live here in the city of Rock Hill with my husband of 18 years and three children (ages 16, 14, and soon to be 7). I graduated from York Technical College in May 2022 with an Associate Degree in Applied Science, Major in Early Care and Education. I also have a certificate in Early Childhood Development. I love working with children while helping to set the foundation of education. I believe that children learn best when they can learn at their own pace. As an educator, I feel we can meet the children’s needs by being patient with them, and we must make their process of learning an enjoyable moment. When I’m not working with children I enjoy and love spending time with my family, singing, reading, doing and learning new things. I am so excited for my first year at The Palmetto School!
